Le château de Versailles was the capital city in the 17th century. This is something new since the court used to be an itinerant one. Louis XIV known as the Sun king decided to leave the Louvre and settle down along with his court, family, clergy and ministers in Versailles. Thus its history starts with the transformation of the hunting lodge left by his father around 1661 and ends with the French Revolution in 1789.
