Lviv Art Gallery
Possibly the finest art museum in Ukraine, the Lviv Art Gallery is home to more than 60,000 pieces of art from all over the world. Its history can be traced back to a Polish museum started in 1907 and expanded with additional collections in 1914 and 1929. Significantly, it features a large number of pieces by Polish artists that were acquired during World War II, giving it the most impressive collection of Polish art outside of Poland. The gallery has been in its current location, in the renovated palace of Count Potocki, since 2005.
Art is displayed in the gallery throughout thirty halls that are divided by epochs and art movements. In addition to Polish artists, it includes works from leading Dutch, Flemish, French, Italian Austrian, German, Russian and Ukrainian masters from the 14th to 18th centuries. Two particular highlights are Georges de la Tour’s “Payment of Dues” and Tiziano Vecellio’s “Portrait of a Man,” but works by Rubens, Bruegel, Goya and Caravaggio are also featured.

Lotrscak Tower
Marking midday with a single shot from the famous Grič cannon since the late 19th century, Lotrščak Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb’s historic Gornji Grad (Upper Town). It was built into the defense walls of the original 13th-century settlement of Gradec and closed every night at sundown; reputedly those who were left outside the walls overnight were in grave danger of being robbed.
As Gradec was gradually absorbed into present-day Zagreb, the use of Lotrščak Tower changed and down the centuries it has been a prison, a warehouse, a fire station and even a billiards club. The tower has been extended upwards since the 13th century; today the square, five-story tower houses an art gallery but most people visit to scale the spiral staircase up to the observation post to catch a glimpse of the bright tiles on the roof of St Mark’s Church and gaze out across the parks and Baroque mansions of Zagreb’s Donji Grad (Lower Town).

Lyngen Alps

Lujan de Cuyo
Luján de Cuyo is another part of the Mendoza wine-producing region (in addition to Maipú), and was the first Argentine wine-producing region to establish its own appellation of origin. It has a long history of wine production, and is best recognized for Malbec, which is made from a grape that is originally from Bordeaux. In Luján de Cuyo, they also produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, San Giovese, Barbera and other red wines including Pinot Noir. Among whites, there are several for which they are well known, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
In the area of Luján de Cuyo, there is also cultivation of olives and almonds, and there is some adventure tourism, including rafting, rappelling, horseback riding, parasailing and hiking, though of course some of the main activities here is visiting wineries and enjoying the local foods. Luján de Cuyo has a high concentration of vineyards, and has more than 35 wineries that are open to the public.
Most wine tourism to Luján de Cuyo starts in Chacras de Coria, a town popular with wine and food lovers, which maintains its traditional character, including wide boulevards overhung with old trees.

Lukács Thermal Bath
Budapest is well known for its thermal baths and spas, and Lukács Thermal Bath is a favorite among locals. The underground geothermal hot spring waters were used by the St. John's Knights starting in the 12th century and by Turkish dignitaries and soldiers in the 16th century. The baths were rebuilt in the 1880s as a spa hotel and wellness center. Due to the rich minerals found in the water, the thermal waters are said to help heal a variety of ailments. Luminous Lagoon
The name says it all—located off the bay of Falmouth, the site of Luminous Lagoon becomes illuminated every night seemingly by magic. But there’s no sorcery involved when it comes to this glowing turquoise hue; it’s instead millions of microorganisms called dinoflagellates.
These special creatures flock to the Luminous Lagoon for its combination of both salt and freshwater, and they emit a phosphorescent light when disturbed. The Luminous Lagoon is one of only three places in the world you can see this type of phenomenon. And don’t worry—you won’t see any tiny organisms floating around. All you’ll see is iridescent blue.
The warm, shallow water of the lagoon makes it an ideal spot for swimming, and a boat ride through wouldn’t be complete without a stop for just that. Swimming here is often a highlight of an excursion, as you get to paddle around in water that is shimmering in shades of bright blue all around you.

Loughcrew
In Ireland, passage tombs are mysterious relics left over from 5,000 years ago. In these large tombs from 3300 BC, human remains are often found buried beneath rock formations and cairns, and at this ancient Loughcrew burial site, the graves are over 1,000 years older than the famous Egyptian pyramids. Spread out over three large hills, Loughcrew is believed to be the largest collection of passage tombs in Ireland. While some of the cairns are closed to visitors, those that are open display curious rock drawings that have survived for thousands of years. During the spring and autumnal equinox, crowds brave the early morning cold and trek in the dark to “Cairn T,” where a narrow beam of light that appears at sunrise illuminates the Neolithic art. It’s an ancient place of mystery and wonder that researchers can’t quite explain, and one of the best archaeological sites found anywhere in Ireland.

Loughcrew is located in County Meath a little over an hour from Dublin. Two miles outside of Oldcastle, a narrow road leads to a parking lot that then leads to a grassy trail. A steep climb up the unpaved trail leads to up to the cairns, and there is no admission fee to visit the site. Opening hours in May-September are from 10am-6pm, and if the gate is locked when visiting in winter, it’s often possible to obtain a key in the adjacent Loughcrew Gardens.

Luxor Temple
The enormous Luxor Temple was one of the great constructions of the New Kingdom (dating from the 14th century BC) dedicated to the god Amun. It was known as the “Southern Sanctuary” and was the site of ceremonies aimed at encouraging the life-giving Nile floods.
Once through the processional Avenue of Sphinxes you come to the First Pylon, which announces the phenomenal scale of the stonework here: statues, columns and obelisks all compete with each other in a race to the sky.
Ensuing civilizations have also left their marks: there’s a shrine erected by Alexander the Great, Roman wall frescoes as well as a 14th century AD mosque, ensuring this remains a place of worship in the present day.

Lost Dutchman State Park
The Lost Dutchman State Park covers 320 acres in the middle of Arizona, not far from the Superstition Mountains. The park was created in 1977, and it's named after the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. This perhaps-apocryphal mine is said to be full of gold, but its exact location is unknown (people have died trying to find it). It's believed to be in the Superstition Mountains not far from where the park is today.
Lost Dutchman State Park is a popular spot for hiking, mountain biking, and camping, and there are even naturalist-led hikes and programs you can join. Periodically, the park hosts “Star Party” events during which you can see an incredible array of stars in the night sky over the park.

Luxor Museum
While the size of its collection can’t rival the treasures of Cairo, Luxor Museum is renowned as one of the thoughtfully assembled displays of antiquities in Egypt. Most of its exhibits come from temples and other constructions in the Luxor area.
Highlights of the museum include sculptural depictions of Amenhotep III, under whose reign many of Luxor’s temples were built. There are also a number of objects from the controversial opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun, including an imposing cow-headed deity, and the Talatat Wall, reassembled from one of the temples at Karnak.
For many visitors the chief attractions here are also among the newest: the mummies of pharaohs Ahmose I and Ramses I, which were presented to the public with much fanfare in 2004. They are shown without their bandages; a gruesome yet fascinating sight.

Lukla
Lukla is maybe best known for having the dubious honor of being the town with the world’s most dangerous airport, the Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Not only are there no radar devices, but the airstrip is on a slope as well as flanked by both a 3,000-meter drop into the valley on one side and a steep cliff on the other. Each safe landing is a heroic feat by the pilot – if it can be achieved at all that is, since weather conditions regularly shut down the airport for days. Nonetheless, for travellers heading into Sagarmatha National Park for hiking as well as those starting their climb to Everest Base Camp, flying to this crazy airport is simply part of the already adrenalin-fuelled package.
If you can manage to keep your eyes open during the approach, the stunning views will stay with you forever. Between the haze and clouds covering the mountains, you can see terraced fields, the occasional village but mostly a landscape of tall peaks and harsh cliffs rushing past. Lukla itself is entirely tailored to trekkers and there are lots of shops with outdoor gear, cafés with free wifi and several guest houses. The houses are made of simple gray stone with bright blue door and window frames and colorful roofs. All the while the air in the lively village is filled with the hum of the propeller planes landing every few minutes and the surefooted steps of porters hauling huge loads of food, drinks and everything else needed toward the Everest region.

The plane is by far the easiest way to reach Lukla in this remote corner of the Everest region. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is about 25 minutes, but for those with a fear of flying and no love for extreme airports, it is also possible to reach the village from Kathmandu via a bus journey to Jiri followed by a five day hike.

Lukang
Lukang is a sleepy Taiwan town where narrow winding streets are lined with old heritage buildings and quaint little shops. However, right up until the end of the 19th century the picture looked quite different, as Lugang was once a significant cultural and commercial center serving as the economic and transport hub of central Taiwan.
The Japanese invasion, the silting of its harbor, and a refusal to allow railroads to pass through the city eventually led to Lukang’s commercial decline. However, this lack of more development meant that the town avoided the process of modernization that saw historical buildings in cities such as Tainan and Taipei torn down. As a result, Lukang is one of the few big towns in Taiwan that remains preserved just as it was in its heyday.
Nowadays, visitors take day trips to Lukang to soak up all that history and sense of tradition. It’s a place to wander around local handicraft shops, stopping only to indulge in the distinctive cuisine that came about as a result of the town’s multicultural past. Lukang is also home to some 200 temples, including some of the most visually stunning Chinese temples in the whole of Taiwan.

Puerto Rican buses and jitneys are available, but it is most convenient to rent a car or visit on a guided beach tour. Via car, depart San Juan on Route 3 toward Luquillo.
When to Get There
Puerto Rico is generally very busy in December through February, as it’s a hot spot for those escaping the mainland United States’ frigid winters. Aim to visit in the spring, after the tourist glut and before the hot, rainy season. Luquillo Beach can get quite crowded on summer weekends, when it fills up with local families.
Things to Do Near Luquillo Beach
Near Luquillo Beach is the lush El Yunque Rain Forest, which features hiking trails, La Coca Waterfall, Yokahú Observation Tower, and plenty of local flora and fauna. Another don’t-miss sight is the nearby bioluminescent bay, where visitors can swim in waters that light up with glowing phytoplankton after dark.

Love Park (Parque del Amor)
Dedicated to Lima’s lovers, Love Park (Parque del Amor) understandably attracts couples who come to enjoy the Pacific Ocean views, especially around sunset. Located in the Miraflores district, the park bears a resemblance to Park Güell in Barcelona, thanks to the colorful mosaic walls displaying quotes on love spread throughout.
At the center of the park stands a sculpture by Victor Delfín entitled El Beso (The Kiss), unveiled in 1993 and still the best known work by the Peruvian artist. If you’re in Lima for Valentine’s Day, head to Love Park to watch young couples compete in a longest kiss contest staged by the statue.

If you want a bird’s eye view of Lima (or an adrenaline rush), the park is one of the best places around for paragliding, which you can try tandem with an experienced pilot.

Lourdes Grotto
Named in honor of the famous French Catholic landmark, Lourdes Grotto is a beautiful shrine carved into the side of a limestone hill in the San Nicholas area of Oranjestad. Built in 1958 by a local priest and his parishioners, the Lourdes Grotto is now complete with a 1,500-pound statue of the Virgin Mary. This touching homage to the Roman Catholic religion is a must for those interested in visiting Aruba’s holy sites.
