Unlike neighboring oyster companies, Tomales Bay does not allow on-site picnicking or grilling; you simply buy your oysters and take them to a nearby beach or park to enjoy them. Some Marin County food tours include this as a stop, although many stop at Hog Island Oyster Company or Marshall Store.

Sentinel Dome
Though not as well known as Yosemite's famous Half Dome, at 4,150 feet high a climb up Sentinel Dome offers some incredible 360 degree views of the national park. The 2.6 mile hike up is well-marked with signs and is easy to follow. From the gently-rounded top you can see the whole of Yosemite Valley, including Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, El Capitan, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The trail is mostly flat, except for the granite slope to the summit.
Sentinel Dome first became known for the lone Jeffrey Pine tree that grew from its peak. The tree is no longer there, but was well-documented by photographer Ansel Adams. The dome is a sight in itself, but the real rewards are the views from atop. It's a good alternative to the often crowded viewpoints of Glacier Point, and is particularly scenic during the sunset hours.
Practical Info
To access Sentinel Dome, park at the Sentinel Dome/Taft Point lot on the north side of Glacier Point Road. From there the trail is marked to the summit (it's the same as the Taft Point trailhead.) It is about a 40 minute drive up from the valley floor.

Taft Point
The trail to Taft Point offers some of the best views in Yosemite National Park. The viewpoint is an excellent overlook of El Capitan mountain and the valley's golden meadows.
The 2.2 mile, moderate roundtrip hike to Taft Point is well-shaded by tall trees. Winding through an open meadow area, you can see white quartz and granite hills surrounded by dark green pine forest. The hike is relatively easy given the payoff of the dramatic views once you reach the point.
Most of the trail is flat. There are also vertical cracks visible in the granite cliffs "” these are known as The Fissures. The rocky cracks drop all the way down to the valley floor at points and are an impressive natural sight. You can also see Yosemite Falls from the point at the canyon's edge (not recommended for those with a fear of heights!)
Practical Info
To get to the Taft Point trailhead, take Glacier Point Road up from the Yosemite Valley floor. It's about a 40 minute drive, with a small section for parking at Taft Point/Sentinel Dome. The trail forks left for Taft Point and is well-marked. Check road conditions before heading out. Weather is best for hiking March to November.

Japanese Tea Garden
Dotted with Buddha statues, dwarf trees, and koi ponds, the Japanese Tea Garden (or Hagiwara Tea Garden) is a tranquil place amidst the urbanity of San Francisco. Experience the beauty and harmony of a traditional, Japanese-style garden, enjoy a cup of tea at the teahouse, and experience other aspects of Japanese culture in the heart of Golden Gate Park.
The Basics
San Francisco's Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the US. Many visitors walk its five acres (two hectares) quickly while others pace more slowly, using the meticulously designed landscape features"”such as Japanese maples, Buddha statues, and stepping stones"”as tools for reflection and contemplation. The property's teahouse pavilion, which serves light snacks and an assortment of traditional and modern-style teas, and adjacent gift shop are a hub of activity.
Many San Francisco tours cruise through Golden Gate Park, and some popular tour packages include entrance to the garden. But most Segway, self-guided surrey, and hop-on hop-off bus tours take you to the garden but do not include the entrance fee.
Things to Know Before You Go

- Families with small children will enjoy watching fish swim around in the koi ponds and walking around the sunken garden.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes"”the garden has many uneven and slippery surfaces"”and layers to ensure that you keep warm in San Francisco's unpredictable climate.

The Japanese Tea Garden is located in Golden Gate Park, right near the DeYoung Museum, California Academy of Sciences, and San Francisco Botanic Garden. MUNI's 44-O'Shaughnessy, 5-Fulton, 21-Hayes, and N-Judah streetcar all stop within walking distance of the garden's entrance. If driving, there is a parking lot at the Music Concourse and free on-street parking throughout the park.
When to Get There
The garden opens at 9am every day of the year, and closes at 4:45pm November through February and 6pm March through October. Arrive before 10am to experience the garden's pre-crowd tranquility, especially on summer weekends and holidays. Seeing the cherry blossoms in bloom (March and April) is worth braving the flocks of visitors.
The Establishment of the Garden
Today's Japanese Tea Garden was originally created as a Japanese Village exhibit for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. Japanese landscape architect Makoto Hagiwara and Golden Gate Park superintendent and horticulturalist John McLaren reached an agreement for Mr. Hagiwara to create and maintain a permanent Japanese-style garden as a gift to the citizens of San Francisco. Many of the bonsai trees maintained by Mr. Hagiwara now tower over the teahouse, main gate, and gardens.
