What To Expect
Catch the 8.27am train to Kalambaka from Athens Railway Station and enjoy a relaxed journey that gives you the chance to admire the beauty of the Greek countryside.On arrival at Kalambaka station at around 1:30pm, meet your English-speaking driver who will be holding a sign with your name on it and who will transfer you to your hotel.You will have the whole afternoon at leisure to discover this picturesque small town, built at the foot of the majestic grey rocks crowned by the Meteora monasteries. Perhaps pay a visit to the Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum. Explore the museum's collections, and view the mushrooms, notable for their wide variety of shapes and colors, as you find out about the species that thrive in Greece.Tonight, dinner is included at the restaurant of your hotel. The next morning, meet your local guide in the hotel lobby and set off to visit two of the main monasteries of Meteora and discover the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area.Your morning tour will transport you back to the dark ages and the story of the first hermits and monks who laid the foundations of what would later become the monastic community of Meteora. Learn which monastery was the first to be established and the true motivations behind the monks' decision to try to climb the steep rock pinnacles and build the monasteries at their tops.After your morning tour, your driver will transfer you back to Kalambaka, where you will have time for lunch (own expense). Catch the 5:22pm train back to Athens from Kalambaka, arriving back in the city at 10:15pm.
