The tour showcases the best of the Lake District, taking you through magnificent mountain scenery to ten stunning lakes and other beauty spots.Along the way, admire the surrounding fells and talk to your guide about the history, events and people that have shaped this much-loved National Park. Skirt the banks of Lake Windermere, and stretch your legs in the pretty village of Ambleside. After a photo stop at Rydal Water, continue to Grasmere and Thirlmere reservoir before traveling through the Borrowdale Valley to Bassenthwaite Lake and then negotiating Honister Pass.Next, visit the village of Buttermere and travel onward to Keswick via Crummock Water. Enjoy free time to walk around and enjoy lunch (own expense) in this charming market town before heading for Castlerigg Stone Circle. Focusing on the western Lake District, this full-day tour follows the path of Roman Emperor Hadrian's legions in the 2nd century AD, when they built roads through the high passes.Thrill on the steep ascents of Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass - the latter England's steepest road - and pass the ruined Roman fort of Hardknott Fort before absorbing epic views of Upper Eskdale and Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. Continue to Ravenglass and enjoy a ride on the miniature Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow-gauge railway. Gaze at the ancient woodlands and fells of Eskdale from your cozy carriage, and after lunch (own expense) at a country inn, stop to contemplate the famously beautiful views over Wastwater, England's deepest lake.Visit Muncaster Castle, a magnificent 14th-century house famed for its flower-filled gardens and World Owl Centre, home to some of the world's most beautiful and rare owls. Stroll around the gardens and visit the center; or if the house is open, enjoy an interior tour (own expense).
