What To Expect

Your 6-day northern Portugal tour begins with hotel pickup in Lisbon. In addition to receiving insight from your guide, you'll enjoy free time to explore on your own.Please see the Itinerary section below for details on each day of the tour.ItineraryDay 1: Lisbon - Óbidos - Alcobaça - Nazar e - Batalha - Fátima From Lisbon, relax on a comfortable coach and enjoy the drive north, past fields of fruit trees and windmills. When you arrive in Óbidos, take a guided walking tour of this beautiful medieval city. Continue to Alcobaça, where the Alcobaça Monastery's towering Gothic church, one of the first Gothic manifestations in Portugal, overlooks the city. Visit the monastery and see the famous delicate tombs of Don Pedro and Inês de Castro. Next, have lunch in the fishing village of Nazar e (own expense) and wander along the coastal paths while hearing interesting stories from your guide. The Batalha Monastery, the final resting place of Prince Henry the Navigator, is your next stop. After you visit the monastery, relax on the drive to Fátima, your last stop of the day. Have free time to explore the city, visit the Our Lady of Fátima Sanctuary and enjoy a local dinner (own expense).Accommodation: Hotel Santa Maria or similar in FátimaDay 2: Fátima - Coimbra - Aveiro - Porto (B)Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and set off to cover 167 miles (270km) in one day! First, visit Coimbra, home to one of the oldest universities in the world with a beautiful, Baroque-style library. After a tour of the university, visit the Church of Santa Clara and Coimbra's town center, where shops display local ceramic works. Have lunch at a local restaurant (own expense), and then relax on the coach drive to Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal due to its canals. Here, look over the famous moliceiro boats (half-moon shaped vessels). Next, head off to Portugal's second-largest city, Porto, a beautiful city built on the hillsides of the Douro River mouth. Visit the city center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have free time to explore the city and enjoy a delicious dinner (own expense).Accommodation: Hotel Ipanema Porto or similar in PortoDay 3: Porto - Guimaraes - Braga (B)Have breakfast at the hotel. Porto the second largest city of Portugal and world heritage by UNESCO - a living amphitheater inviting us to make a morning visit to discover the riverside area, old houses, palaces, churches that history has made eternal and Port wine, known worldwide. We continue to the Minho, the northwest region of Portugal that offers natural green sceneries and the sparkling "green wine". Starting by Guimaraes - the cradle of the nation, birthplace of the first king of Portugal, where, walking along the historic centre, for moments one is plunged back into medieval times. Visit the Sacred Hill, crowned by the Castle, as well the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, which original building dates back to the 15th centuries. Drive to Braga known as the "Portuguese Rome" for its concentration of religious architecture, as the oldest Cathedral of the country, and the "Bom Jesus do Monte" Sanctuary with famous baroque stairway and gardens. Return to Porto.Accommodation: same hotel in PortoDay 4: Porto - Santiago de Compostela - Porto (B) On your forth day, enjoy Breakfast at the hotel before setting off for Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia and the centre of pilgrimage at the end of the Santiago Way. In 1985, UNESCO declared Santiago de Compostela World Cultural Heritage and you have the entire day to freely discover this fascinating city. Wander its historical streets and learn about its most extraordinary monuments before sampling some of the traditional local dishes. Accommodation: same hotel in PortoDay 5: Porto - Amarante - Vila Real - Vale do Douro - Lamego - Urgeiriça (B) Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Amarante, a pretty town proud of Sao Gonçalo known for the promotion of love and marriage were the monastery facing the river houses his tomb and his lively bustling market where you can find fruit, vegetables, chickens, cloths, and an immense variety of other popular items. After, drive to Vila Real - visiting the gardens of the manor of Mateus, which façade is still depicted on the well-known Portuguese Rose wine bottles. Then we enter in the Port wine region, travelling through the vineyards and the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley. Stop in Lamego, overlooked by one of Portugal's most important shrines "N. S. Rem edios" with its magnificent baroque style staircase. Maybe you will try some of the local delicacies such as the local ham or the famous "Bola de Lamego" (a loaf baked in the oven with smoked ham). Continue to the mountainous hinterland to Viseu, center of the Dao Vineyards and a city connected with Portugal´s oldest hero, Viriato, the Lusitanian chief. In the shadow of the Cathedral, narrow streets and doorways with coats of arms carved in granite make up the ancient town of Viseu. Along the centre we find a busy commercial area. Arrival to Urgeiriça. Accommodation: Hotel da Urgeiriça or similar in UrgeiriçaDay 6: Urgeiriça - Bussaco - Tomar - Lisbon (B) Eat a good breakfast to prepare for the longest day of your trip, during which you will travel 226 miles (365km)! Relax on your comfortable coach and take in views of the beautiful Portuguese countryside as you set course to Bussaco. Here, visit the romantic Hotel Palace, a former royal hunting lodge located in the Serra do Bussaco mountain range. Continue to the village of Tomar, whose lands were bestowed to the Order of the Knights Templar in 1159 for its assistance to Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, in the Christian re-conquest of these lands. Here, tour the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Convent of Christ, the city's pedestrian-friendly historic center and the riverside. Finally, admire more views of the Portuguese countryside as you head back to Lisbon.
