What To Expect
Your day tour starts with hotel pickup in the morning by your private guide in an air-conditioned vehicle. Head first to the Sichuan Cuisine Museum, located west of the city in Pixian. When you arrive, meet a museum guide, who welcomes you with a snack - a pancake made with one of several types of fillings. Browse the museum's Classic Collection Hall to see antique kitchen items, and learn about Pixian chili bean paste at the Raw Materials Display, where you can also taste another local food, pea jelly. Other exhibits include Sichuan Restaurant Alley, which displays old Chengdu dining styles and architecture from more than 100 years ago. Also at the museum, learn how to crush chilies into powder, make bean curd, and more. With a chef, you'll be guided through the process of preparing three typical Sichuan dishes with Chinese cooking customs. Then taste your creations served with juice, tea, red wine, and fruit. Next, return to the city to visit Chengdu Renmin Park, also known as People's Park. Enjoy some people-watching, from locals drinking tea to others singing and dancing. You may rent a paddleboat for a ride on the lake, if you wish (own expense), and then visit Heming Tea House for a traditional tea service, an important social custom. Continue your tour to Kuanzhai Ancient Street of Qing Dynasty, also known as Kuanzhai Xiangzi or Wide and Narrow Alley. Surviving the ravages of time while much of the rest of the city fell into ruin over the years, the street was revitalized in the early 2000s and is home to old lodges, tea houses, and a traditional puppet show. Admire the courtyard culture of Chengdu with its gardens and trees, and check out the neighboring Well Alley, lined with cafes, shops, and pups. Your tour ends with return to your hotel for drop-off.
