What To Expect

Admire the beauty and grace of Japan's traditional performing arts during this dinnertime show in Kyoto's Gion district. Enjoy an authentic meal of specialties while you take in a variety of cultural performances covering dancing, flower arrangement, music, a tea ceremony, puppet theater, and more.Start your excursion with a pickup from either the New Miyako Hotel or from the Kyoto Hotel Okura in the early evening. Head in your taxi to Gion Corner to watch your 50-minute show, offering a great introduction to the wide range of Japanese performing arts, accompanied by helpful explanations from your guide.First watch the graceful movements of the theater's maiko dancers, who entertain and entrance you with their lovely kyo-mai, a dance which owes its origins to the city of Kyoto. Next up is a demonstration of the delicate art of Japanese flower arrangement, or ikebana. Soon you'll be serenaded by a performance of the koto, a six-string Japanese-style of zither that produces a range of gorgeous notes when plucked. You'll also have the chance to enjoy gagaku court music, a style that was historically played during Imperial court events and during religious ceremonies. Finish your performance by watching the kyogen, a form of comedic theater, and with a show of puppet theater, also known as bunraku. At the conclusion of your evening's performance, follow your guide into the Gion District's many streets lined with historic buildings, heading to Gion Yoshi-ima, a traditional inn, where you'll enjoy a candlelight dinner. The night's vegetarian meal includes dishes such as eggplant, tofu, renkon, ginger and shiitake mushrooms. During your meal you'll also have the chance to watch an intricate Japanese tea ceremony. Admire the beautiful rituals of the ceremony as the tea is steeped and served to you and the guests. Finish your night with a drop-off at your original departure location.
