The ancient capital of Hoa Lu is the first capital of Vietnam in the tenth century, which is is a strong fortification erected by nature and man. It covers an area of 300 hectares ( about 3.0 km2), including both the Inner and Outer Citadels. It consists of defensive earthen walls, palaces, temples and shrines, and was surrounded and protected by rugged mountain and imposing cave system. Take a boat trip on the Ngo Dong River through rice paddies and limestone karsts to see some of Northern Vietnam's best natural wonders, the Tam Coc or namly the three caves. It includes three big caves Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Bai offering similar scenery to what you can see in Halong Bay without the suffocating crowds.From Tam Coc boat pier, drive to the east nearly 3 km, tourists will reach Bich Dong pagoda - an ever ancient three tiered cave pagoda. It is only accessible by steep stone steps, but it is really worth climbing up for a charming pagoda and panorama view from the top.
