What To Expect
Your adventure begins at the Kailua-Kona pier where you'll board the submarine, Atlantis, which has been featured in National Geographic television specials for its high-tech journey to the reef. As you cruise the depths of the Kona coast, learn how volcanoes shaped this landscape both above as well as below water, and hear why the waters just off the Big Island attract such a wealth of marine life. Over the course of your 35-minute journey, you'll spot colorful reef fish nibbling on coral and swimming in synchronized schools, and larger fish cruising slowly but surely above the action-packed reef. If you're lucky, there's even the chance you could see an eel, lobster, octopus or turtle, and you never know when a passing reef shark might swim in front of the sub.The adventure continues back above water, where you'll switch boats and cruise on top of the waves in search of Hawaiian spinner dolphins. These dolphins are year-round residents in Hawaii, and are known as 'spinners' for their ability to leap and do seven rotations above water. Occasionally the dolphins will swim near the boat and play in the wake by the bow, which makes for prime viewing and amazing photos of your Big Island snorkeling adventure.Next, the snorkeling portion continues in a calm, protected bay by the coast, where you'll probably recognize many of the fish from your submarine tour that morning. This time, however, you can hear the fish as they nibble on the coral and see them just inches from your face, and it's an adventurous way to end a day full of fun off the Kona coast. Please note: This is a seasonal tour that only operates from April to December. For details on how to book these two tours see 'Additional Info.'Â
