What To Expect
Meet a driver/guide at your hotel in Cappadocia, then travel to Derinkuyu Underground City, a multi-level city carved into solid rock. Duck through the low entrance to explore tunnels with air and garbage shafts, wells, and chimneys, as well as living quarters with wine-making areas and chapels. As you walk through the rooms, learn the history of this fascinating city, which could accommodate up to 20,000 people with their livestock, and has been a refuge for Muslim Arabs, Christians, and Cappadocian Greeks during tumultuous times. Following your tour of the underground city, stop at a local restaurant for lunch, then continue to Ihlara Valley, where more than 60 Byzantine churches are carved into the rock walls. There are underground homes in the valley, too, built by Cappadocian Greeks that left during the population exchange in 1923. If desired, you can choose to take a 1.9-mile (3-km.) hike that passes many of the valley's churches, some of which are decorated with brightly colored frescoes depicting biblical scenes. This 7-hour tour concludes with return transfer to your hotel.
