What To Expect
Meet your guide at your Cairo hotel, and travel to the Old City in a private, air-conditioned van with WiFi on board. Start the day at the Mosque of Ahmad ibn Tulun, then continue on foot to Bab Zuweila, one of three surviving gates to 10th-century Fatamid Cairo. Trace a route down Muezz Street to Al Khayam Yah, where artisans have sewn ceremonial tents for weddings and celebrations since medieval times. Visit a series of religious landmarks: explore the 15th-century mosque-mausoleum of Circassian Sultan al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh, the moving Sabil-Kuttab of Tusun Pasha, and the Mosque of al-Azhar, which has been a center of Islamic theology for over 1,000 years. Dive back into modern life in Khan el-Khalili bazaar, where you'll find aisles of colorful stalls overflowing with handicrafts, antiques and perfumes. Take in the hospital, madrasa and mausoleum built by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun in the 13th-century and the madrasa-khanqah of Sultan Barquq. See the Old City's Museum of Textiles and the Mosque of al-Aqmar, then visit Bayt al-Sihaymi to get a glimpse of daily life in an Ottoman Cairene household. End your walk at the northern walls and gates, then finish the day with return transfer to your hotel.
