What To Expect

Start your full-day shore excursion with pickup from the Port of Tauranga and ride in the private comfort of a luxury Mercedes minivan to Waitomo, located about 2 hours away. The Waitomo Caves offer three different caverns from which to choose: Waitomo Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri Cave, and Aranui Cave. Explore one or combine them (entrance fees payable direct); the choice is yours.Waitomo Glowworm Cave (45 minutes)Ride a boat into this cave inhabited by thousands of tiny glowworms. You will be led by on-site guides, many of whom are ancestors of the Maori chief who originally explored the cave before tours began in the 1880s. Before your boat ride into one of New Zealand's first tourist attractions, walk through Cathedral Cave, known for its fantastic acoustics. Ruakuri Cave (2 hours)Explore this cave in depth while guided with a small group. The entrance into Ruakuri Cave is a spectacular spiral design, leading into the limestone chambers. The softly folding shawl-like formations and crystal tapestries have been developed over millions of years. Once you are deeper into the cave you will see glowworms up close and hear the rumble of the underground waterfalls close by. Aranui Cave (1 hour)Set in the forest, this cave provides the opportunity to wander off the beaten track through New Zealand bush. Once you reach Aranui Cave you will be awed by the beautiful white, pink, and brown stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. En route to Waitomo, you'll follow a picturesque route via the Kaimai Ranges with panoramic views across the farmland of Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. Learn about what typifies rural life in the Northland with commentary on New Zealand history and local industries provided by your personal driver/guide. Then spot kiwis and tuataras on a visit to the Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park before the return drive to port in time to meet your cruise ship.
