Depart your central Beijing hotel at about midday by private, climate-controlled vehicle with your guide, and travel to Jingshan Hill in Jingshan Park.Hear how the hill was constructed using earth excavated during the building of the Forbidden City, and climb to the top to absorb the far-reaching views over the palace rooftops and downtown Beijing.From here, continue to the evocatively named Purple Bamboo Park, admiring its bamboo groves as you head for the imperial-era waterway that winds it way from here to the Summer Palace.Step aboard a canopied boat and enjoy a scenic cruise along the waters, once exclusively used by China's emperors to reach the palace.After your roughly 40-minute boat ride, disembark and tour the Summer Palace, whose landscaped gardens and pavilions were created in 1750 as a summer retreat for China's rulers.See highlights including the boat-shaped Marble Boat pavilion and Longevity Hill's halls and towers, and stretch your legs along the Long Corridor, the world's longest covered walkway. This wooden walkway fringes the palace's Kunming Lake, and is adorned with 14,000 exquisite imperial paintings of landscapes, animals, and figures.Next, step onto a small boat and cruise to Suzhou Street, a picture-perfect canalside village created by the emperors to mimic China's water towns. As you sail, pass some of the palace's most beautiful bridges, including the 17-Arch Bridge, the longest imperial bridge in the country.Having explored the Summer Palace, head for dinner at Beijing's 1,329-foot (405-meter) high Central TV Tower, the city's tallest structure.
