What To Expect
Get an early start on the day, then board an air-conditioned coach for the 47-mile (75-km) trip to Hluhluwe - iMfolozi Park, where wild animals thrive on 237,221 acres (96,000 ha.) of hills and lowlands. Watch for the "Big Five" as you tour the park on a morning game drive: elephants, rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, lions, and leopards are all found within the reserve's boundaries. More than 300 bird species have been documented here, and it's among the best places in the world to sight nyala, a spiral-horned antelope with dramatic markings. Pause for a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue to Gooderson DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village, which keeps Zulu traditions alive with demonstrations of dancing, crafts, and drumming. Taste the Zulu beer that's been brewed in the region for generations, then see how locals make shields, spears, baskets, and clay pots using old fashioned methods. You'll have a one-on-one consultation with the Sangoma, or traditional healer, with plenty of time to interact with the "villagers," and shop for unique, handmade souvenirs. Following your time at Gooderson DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village, begin the return trip to Richards Bay, where this tour concludes with drop-off at the cruise port.
