What To Expect
Rising an impressive 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) above sea level, Kauai's Waimea Canyon is a natural geologic wonder formed by the passage of water through lava rock over thousands of years. Your half-day tour of this incredible landscape begins with your choice of early morning or afternoon departure. Meet your guide at Poipu Plaza, where you'll be fitted for a mountain bike and helmet, then board a minivan for the ride up to the top of the canyon. Along the way, enjoy aromatic Hawaiian coffee and blueberry muffins (morning tour) or cold drinks and locally made cookies (afternoon tour). At the lip of the canyon, take in majestic views of jagged red lava rock cutting through a blanket of greenery in the valley below. Then, it's time to hop on your bike and begin the thrilling 12-mile (19-km) descent down smooth paved roads that wind through Waimea Canyon State Park. Stop at several points along the way to admire spectacular views and take photos while your guide shares information about the area's geology, history and legends. Once you've made it down the mountain, cycle through the beautiful flatlands of Koke'e State Park and learn about the native island plant and wildlife species you see. Admire views of the expansive Pacific Ocean, then return to the original departure point at the end of your 4.5-hour tour.
