Overview

Enjoy some of Juneau's favorite activities in one tour on this 6.5-hour combo adventure that includes a whale-watching cruise, a visit to Mendenhall Glacier, and a meal at Tracy's King Crab Shack. You'll have the chance to see humpback whales in their natural environment, go hiking in Tongass National Forest, learn about the area's wildlife and landscape at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and chow down on king crab leg, crab cakes, and more. Morning and afternoon departure times are available so you can select the option that best suits you.

What To Expect

Your tour starts at your selected check-in time, when you'll meet a dock representative in front of the Mt. Roberts Tramway for the narrated transfer to the harbor to board your 2-hour whale-watching cruise. On the custom-made boat, stay warm in the heated cabin with its wide viewing windows or go out on the deck to watch for humpback whales, who gather in the waters near Auke Bay to feed in the summer. Your captain will slow down when they are spotted, giving you the opportunity to take photos, catch any antics like tail slapping or breaching, and listen to commentary about the animals from the on-board naturalist. You may also spot bald eagles, sea lions, or Dall's porpoises, or maybe even an orca, if you're lucky. Back on dry land, board the coach for the drive to Mendenhall Glacier, one of the dozens of glaciers that are part of the Juneau Icefield. Depending on the time, you can go hiking on the different trails: Nugget Creek Falls (1 hour and 15 minutes round-trip), Photo Point (20 minutes round-trip), or Steep Creek (10-minute walk) to look for possible fish spawning and other wildlife. You'll also visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, where you can enjoy an elevated view of the glacier, a short film, and interactive displays.When you're ready to leave, take the half-hourly shuttle from the Bear Stop back to the port; it's a 30-minute ride, and once you're back in town, make your own way to Tracy's King Crab Shack for the last activity of your tour. You'll receive a combo meal that includes a meaty king crab leg, crab cakes, and lobster bisque. Beer and wine are available for purchase at your own expense. Please note: The afternoon whale cruise and glacier visit may be reversed with a shuttle to the glacier first, which allows for more time at the glacier. You'll be picked up at the glacier at the appointed time for the whale-watching tour, and then dropped off in town for your meal at Tracy's.
